(NewsNation) — Sam Arellano a 10-year-old, survived a gunshot wound during Wednesday’s Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl parade.
Arellano attended the celebratory parade with his grandfather, aunt and uncle.
Arellano hid behind a trash can for protection when he heard the shots, something he credits his school for teaching him what to do. He was shot in the torso but avoided critical injury. The bullet missed his lung by only about four inches.
One person died and 22 others were injured after police say a dispute between several people broke out into gunfire Wednesday at the parade in Missouri.
Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas held a news conference Thursday morning to provide updates on the investigation into Wednesday’s shooting.
Preliminary investigations show there were no threats of terrorism or homegrown violent extremism, Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves said.
Police have not disclosed the identities of three people who have been detained or said whether any of them will face charges. Graves said two of the three people are juveniles, and police recovered several firearms.
No charges have been filed yet as police continue to investigate the involvement of others. Graves has called for any witnesses to come forward with information they may have.
The woman who died, Lisa Lopez-Galvan, 43, was a Kansas City radio DJ and mother of two, according to radio station KKFI’s Facebook page.
