(NewsNation) — Last year, Congress was very unproductive and passed fewer than two dozen bills. So why did Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., say Congress should stop doing any additional work on important issues including immigration and the war in Ukraine?

Johnson voiced criticism of his fellow lawmakers during a recent appearance on Real America’s Voice, suggesting the country would fare better without further legislative action. The senator joined NewsNation’s “CUOMO” to make the case for why he said things would be better off if Congress never passed another piece of legislation.

“The federal government doesn’t solve too many problems. It exacerbates many, causes many. And so we have to first do no harm,” Johnson said.

During the interview, Johnson emphasized the need for caution in Congress, likening the federal government to a ship weighed down by accumulated “barnacles.” He warned against hasty decision-making and advocated for a more restrained approach, urging lawmakers to prioritize doing less damage than they cause.

In response to questions regarding his stance on legislative inactivity, Johnson defended his commitment to the country, citing concerns over issues such the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. He expressed a deep sense of responsibility towards addressing what he perceives as imminent threats facing the nation.

However, when pressed on his approach to addressing pressing issues such as border security, Johnson underscored his previous efforts, including holding hearings and collaborating on initiatives such as Operation Safe Return. He also critiqued a recent Senate bill aimed at border security, arguing it would have worsened the situation by limiting presidential authority and potentially normalizing open border policies.

Despite his opposition to the Senate bill, Johnson affirmed his willingness to work on border security solutions.
