(NewsNation) — A North Carolina teen was expelled from school for singing at a venue that sold alcohol, she told NewsNation Thursday.
Bailey Griggs, also known by her stage name Bailey Marie, was expelled from Cramerton Christian Academy before her senior year.
The school informed her mother in an email that she was being expelled for performing in places where “drugs and alcohol were present,” such as restaurants or bars. The school cited this is in their policy.
Griggs told “NewsNation Now” that her family was taken by surprise and are now figuring out what to do in the fall.
“Right now me and my family are all really shocked and kind of stuck on what to do,” Griggs said.
Griggs and her family are not fighting the decision but said all students should be held to the same standard. Griggs also said she had a message for her former classmates and school officials.
“To the students that I used to be classmates with, I really hope all of you have an amazing senior year,” Griggs said.
She has been invited to perform at Field and Stream Music Fest, a country music festival in South Carolina.
“It was like the light at the end of the tunnel,” Griggs said about being asked to perform. “It’s absolutely surreal, so I’m extremely excited.”
