CLEARFIELD COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A rare 14-karat gold LEGO piece that turned up at a Goodwill Warehouse in Pennsylvania is now up for auction.

The piece, which is called the Bionicle Golden Kanohi Hau Mask, was found by workers at the warehouse in DuBois, Pennsylvania, and is believed to be one of only 30 in existence. In 2001, some were gifted to LEGO employees and the rest were awarded through a contest.

“There’s 30 of the gold ones. They do make some silver ones and some platinum ones,” Goodwill Vice President of E-commerce and Technology Chad Smith said.

When Goodwill workers discovered the tiny treasure, no one knew what it was at first.

“We didn’t know what we had when we found it,” said Jessica Illuzzi, Goodwill Industries of North Central Pennsylvania social media and public relations coordinator. “It came in a box full of random jewelry from the State College store. So it had already been processed through donations there.”

When they discovered what they had, they were stunned. Now, they’re hoping to maximize the donation through an online auction.

“If it reaches the mark of $5,000, that would have been the highest amount …” Smith said. “This is very unique. You never know what you find on shopgoodwill.com.”

Goodwill already received a bid for $33,000, but when the winner failed to pay up, the item was relisted.

The auction has already reached over $4,000 and just like LEGOs, the bids keep stacking.
