(NewsNation) — Catherine, Princess of Wales announced Friday that she is in the early stages of cancer, though details of her condition remain unknown.

Dr. Leigh Vinocur, an emergency physician and chief medical officer at Ananda Medical Practice, joined “NewsNation Now” and explained the importance of cancer screenings for younger people.

“We know that the recommendations for screening sometimes are for older people… but they’re starting to change that,” Vinocur said.

She went on to suggest Princess Kate Middleton, might have been out of the public eye for as long as she was because of her position in the royal family.

“I think the fact that maybe she was hospitalized so long could have been because she was the future queen of England and they wanted to make sure that everything was OK. She said that it was a successful surgery and we have to believe that.”

Middleton, who recently underwent abdominal surgery, has asked for “time, space and privacy.” Without knowing the specific details of her condition, Vinocur explained one possible avenue doctors might explore.

“You can never look at something with the naked eye microscopically, so that’s what they do,” Vinocur said. “In case some cells escape into the bloodstream they can do chemo and hopefully kill those rogue cells before they implant themselves someplace else.”
