LANSING, Mich. (NewsNation Now) — Joe Biden wins Michigan, according to the Associated Press. The Wolverine State has 16 electoral votes for the taking. This puts Biden at 264 electoral votes to President Trump’s 214.

The race between President Donald Trump and Democrat Joe Biden was too early to call in battleground Michigan early Wednesday, with many votes uncounted.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson held a press conference on vote counting.

“We know that tens of thousands of ballots are still outstanding and need to be tabulated,” said Benson.

The Trump campaign filed a lawsuit Wednesday to stop the counting of ballots in Michigan.

“We have filed suit today in the Michigan Court of Claims to halt counting until meaningful access has been granted. We also demand to review those ballots which were opened and counted while we did not have meaningful access.”

Michigan’s Attorney General Dana Nessel said her department hasn’t been formally served the lawsuit but will review and respond accordingly once received. Nessel assured voters that “Michigan will always continue to protect the rights of all voters to have their ballots counted.”

“Michigan’s elections have been conducted transparently, with access provided for both political parties and the public, and using a robust system of checks and balances to ensure that all ballots are counted fairly and accurately.”

From 1972 through 1988 the state voted Republican, then voted Democratic in six consecutive presidential elections from 1992 through 2012.

Trump smashed the “blue wall” in his first White House bid in 2016, narrowly winning Michigan and two other states that had not backed a Republican nominee in decades. Trump defeated Hillary Clinton by just 0.2% in The Wolverine State, becoming the first Republican to win Michigan since George H.W. Bush in 1988.
