(NewsNation) — For the first primary of the season in New Hampshire, only two candidates, former President Donald Trump and former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, remained in the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

Trump was projected to win Tuesday night, securing a sweep of the first two early Republican races and making a November rematch with President Joe Biden look likelier than ever.

During an unscheduled stop at a New Hampshire polling location earlier in the day Tuesday, Trump said he expected Haley to face a “big loss.” Haley wasn’t able pull off an upset victory, but was projected to finishing around 10 or 11 points behind Trump in second place.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden’s Democratic primary challengers, Rep. Dean Phillips, D-Minn., and Marianne Williamson, hoped for a symbolic victory in New Hampshire as they seek momentum in their long-shot bids for the Democratic nomination. However, Biden was projected to win through a write-in effort after not appearing on the ballot.

New Hampshire political insiders lowered their expectations for turnout, though the secretary of state predicted record numbers.
