Latest 2022 midterm updates: House, Senate control remain undecided

Americans are waking up to a Congress still very much up for grabs. A night that started with thoughts of a “red wave” of Republican domination ended with neither party with control of either the Senate or House. A series of critical races – including Senate races in Georgia, Nevada and Arizona – will help determine how much control Republicans or Democrats have.

NewsNation will provide the latest updates on the 2022 midterm election results. Follow the balance of power in the House and Senate through the graphics below, which are updated in real-time by projections from NewsNation’s election partner, Decision Desk HQ.

2022 General Embeds

As of 10 p.m. CT. three Senate races in Georgia, Nevada and Arizona remain uncalled, as do 36 House races across the country as the fate of both chambers of Congress hangs in the balance of the results.

Maricopa County, Arizona officials tell NewsNation’s Robert Sherman they have counted 62,000 votes and anticipate there are 400,000 to 410,000 left to count. The number of early votes dropped off before election day was 290,000 higher in 2022 than 2020, slowing the Arizona counting process.

Democrat Gabriel Vasquez is the projected winner of New Mexico’s 2nd House District.

Speaking as election results continue to come in, President Biden was asked if he would change anything moving forward based on the high percentage of Americans who said they think the country is on the wrong track. His response: “Nothing, because they’re just finding out what we’re doing.”

He also said he would likely make a final announcement about whether he’s running for re-election early next year.

Election skeptics fall flat in competitive midterm races

Dozens of GOP candidates who cast doubt on the legitimacy of the 2020 election results lost their races Tuesday.

Across the board, Republican election skeptics struggled in battleground states. Others won by smaller margins than expected in red territory.

“Americans do not like it when you deny the results of an election — when you are a sore loser, voters don’t care for it,” said NewsNation political editor Chris Stirewalt.

Michigan’s Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer cruised to victory over Republican challenger Tudor Dixon with more than 54% of the vote. Dixon, who received Trump’s endorsement, had previously raised her hand during a debate when candidates were asked who among them believed the 2020 election was stolen.

In Wisconsin, incumbent Democratic Gov. Tony Evers held off Republican challenger Tim Michels, who at one point said he was open to exploring how to decertify Biden’s win in the state.

Republicans who acknowledged Biden’s victory fared better, in general. Incumbent GOP governors in Georgia, Ohio, South Carolina and Tennessee won resounding victories.
