(NewsNation) — The first dive to the Titanic wreck since five people were killed in the Titan submersible disaster last year will depart later this month.

RMS Titanic Inc. owns the salvage rights to the Titanic wreck site and is planning an expedition in July as part of its mission to preserve the history of the site.

In a post to X (formerly known as Twitter) on Monday, RMS Titanic Inc. showcased the experts behind the remotely operated underwater vehicle set to undertake the “imaging and research mission.”

The company confirmed to The Independent that it plans to undertake an uncrewed mission this month despite criticism given the wreckage is a gravesite for more than 1,500 who perished in 1912.

RMS has not visited the site since 2010 and confirmed in a Reddit “Ask Us Anything” session that it would not be going inside the wreckage on this expedition.

“We are super excited about getting a better view of what is down there next month to put together a realistic, responsible wish-list for recovery,” the company’s director of collections, Tomasina Ray, said on Reddit on Monday.

“We know about some cool things that were on Titanic, like the car and the Rubaiyat, and other items, but we know some of those things are likely not accessible, so we focus on the debris field, and then anything of historic importance that could help preserve and tell the story of Titanic.”
