EL PASO, Texas (Border Report) – U.S. immigration authorities have turned over to Mexico a man wanted for the Dec. 6 killing of a woman in the state of Sonora.

Federal agents escorted the suspect only identified as Alfredo N., a commercial truck driver, to waiting Mexican authorities at the Dennis DeConcini Port of Entry in Nogales, Arizona, this week.

Sonora state police officers took custody of the suspect and drove him to Cereso prison in the state capital of Hermosillo.

The Sonora Attorney General’s Office said Alfredo N., 45, was driving a tractor-trailer from the port city of Guaymas to Hermosillo when he allegedly attacked a woman riding with him on Dec. 6, 2023. The woman identified as Amanda N., 43, was struck with a blunt object that cracked her skull and caused traumatic injuries that led to death, the attorney general’s office said.

Sonora authorities requested the help of U.S. Customs and Border Protection to locate Alfredo N. The suspect was found on June 30 in Arizona. U.S. authorities detained him and subsequently removed him from the country.

Officers with the Sonora Criminal Investigations Agency arrested the suspect on the Mexican side of the port of entry on charges of femicide – gender-based murder. The state prosecutor’s office described Amanda N. and Alfredo N. as a couple.

The Sonora Penal Code states the maximum penalty for homicide is 50 years in prison. But femicide, can be punished by 30 to 70 years’ imprisonment.
