(NewsNation) — Seven men, all migrants, will be in court Tuesday for a hearing on their upcoming trial for allegedly assaulting multiple New York City police officers.
Yohenry Brito, 24, and six others connected to the attack in Times Square are expected in court for a case hearing and to set a possible trial date.
The incident happened earlier this year, and the case caused a firestorm of controversy when many of the suspects were arrested then released.
So far, eight men have been charged, but police say there may be as many as six more people they have not yet arrested in connection to the brawl.
The Manhattan district attorney says Brito is seen on video wearing a yellow jacket refusing a police officer’s order to leave the sidewalk. But it spilled out into a brawl involving another officer and more than a dozen other people.
Initially, all the suspects except Brito were arrested and released without bail, which sparked anger across the city. The men were taken into custody again and sent to Riker’s Island to await trial.
Brito was sent to Riker’s initially, but a Brooklyn church paid his $15,000 bond. After a hearing, he was detained on another $15,000 bond.
The suspects are facing a number of charges including assault on a police officer. They’ve all pleaded not guilty.
