TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (NewsNation Now) — Alabama football head coach Nick Saban tested positive for the coronavirus.

The announcement came from the university. Saban, 68, and the university’s Athletic Director Greg Byrne both tested positive.

According to the statement from the university, they were notified early Wednesday afternoon of both Saban and Byrne’s positive tests.

Saban and Byrne left the facility immediately and went home to self-isolate.

“At this time, I do not have any symptoms relative to COVID, and I have taken another PCR test to confirm my diagnosis,” Saban said in a statement.

Byrne noted in his statement, “We’ve been diligent about mask wearing and social distancing from the start and want to encourage you all to take the necessary precautions to help stop the spread of this virus for yourself and those around you.”

The university says at this point in time, the positive tests are limited to Saban and Byrne.

Saban said in his statement that offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian will oversee preparations ahead of the Crimson Tide’s game against the Georgia Bulldogs.

Saban’s daughter Kristen tweeted that the head coach is “literally coaching practice from a Zoom call.”

This is a developing story; check back for updates.
