‘Imminent failure condition’: The Rapidan Dam in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, is in “imminent failure condition,” according to authorities, who have warned residents to be prepared to evacuate. The state has faced serious flooding with the possibility of more rain in the forecast. Gov. Tim Walz said Monday on X, formerly known as Twitter, “Emergency management is on the ground and acting quickly to ensure the safety of Minnesotans as the situation develops.” The latest >

Debate: Ahead of Thursday’s presidential debate, former President Donald Trump has suggested his opponent, President Joe Biden, take a drug test. In a Truth Social post Monday, Trump said he would also “immediately agree to one.” The post contributes to rhetoric Trump has spread before that Biden performs with the assistance of drugs. Biden ad: Trump’s post comes after the Biden campaign launched a battleground state ad last week that lambasts Trump as a “convicted criminal,” highlights his legal issues and his recent felony conviction in New York. “In the courtroom, we see Donald Trump for who he is,” a portion of the ad said. Student loans: Two federal judges in Missouri and Kansas halted sections of a Biden administration initiative intended to lower student loan payments. Saving on a Valuable Education (SAVE) program participants with undergraduate student loan debt were scheduled to see their payments halve next month, from 10% to 5% of their income 225% above the poverty line. More than 8 million people have enrolled in the program. SAVE has canceled over $5.5 billion in debt for over 400,000 borrowers since its inception. Read more > 

Public health crisis: The U.S. surgeon general has declared gun violence a public health crisis. “In 2022, 48,204 total people died from firearm‑related injuries, including suicides, homicides, and unintentional deaths,” Dr. Vivek Murthy’s advisory stated. “This is over 8,000 more lives lost than in 2019 and over 16,000 more lives lost than in 2010.” With the advisory, the nation’s top doctor is calling on the U.S. to expand universal background checks on gun purchases; ban assault weapons and large-capacity magazines for civilian use; and treat firearms like consumer products by requiring regulations about their safety and warning labels detailing risk. None of Murthy’s suggestions can be implemented nationwide without legislation passed by Congress.
